Om Purnamadah Purnamadam: The Mantra of Completeness

ॐ! पूर्णमदः पूर्णमिदं पूर्णात् पूर्णमुदच्यते।

 पूर्णस्य पूर्णमादाय पूर्णमेवावशिष्यते॥

Om purnamadah purnamidam 

purnat purnamudachyate.

Purnasya purnamevaavashishyate

अर्थ

ॐ! वह (परब्रह्म) पूर्ण है, यह (दृश्य जगत/अस्तित्व/सृष्टि ) भी पूर्ण है। उस पूर्ण से ही यह पूर्ण (संसार) उत्पन्न हुआ है। उस पूर्ण (संसार) को उस पूर्ण (परब्रह्म) से निकाल लेने पर, शेष जो बचता है, वह भी पूर्ण ही है।

व्याख्या

इस मंत्र का मुख्य स्रोत बृहदारण्यक उपनिषद (5.1.1) है, जबकि इसे ईशा (ईश) उपनिषद (ईशावास्य उपनिषद) के प्रारंभिक आह्वान के रूप में उच्चारित किया जाता है।

यह मंत्र ईश्वर (अद्वैत) की अनंतता और पूर्णता को दर्शाता है। यह एक अत्यंत गहरा शांति मंत्र है। गणितीय रूप से, यह अनंत से अनंत घटाने पर भी शेष अनंत ही रहने जैसा है। यह शांति और एकाग्रता के लिए उपयोग किया जाता है। 

Meaning

Om! That (the Supreme Reality) is complete; this (the visible universe) is also complete. From that complete Whole, this complete (universe) has emerged. When that complete (universe) is drawn forth from that complete (Supreme Reality), what remains—the remainder—is also complete.

Description 

The primary source of this mantra is the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad (5.1.1), while it is recited as the opening invocation of the Isha Upanishad.

This mantra describes the infinity and completeness of God (Advaita). Advaita, emphasises non-duality and the infinite nature of the divine. Mathematically, it is akin to the remainder remaining infinite even after subtracting infinity from infinity. It is used for peace and concentration.
